Volunteer positions available at Daemon News

Daemon News has many positions with varying levels of involvement.

To make your presence known, join the appropriate mailing lists and send a summary of your skills and desired position!

Daemon News Daily Reporter

Reporting for Daemon News is a very easy job. Basically you look for BSD related news items and post them to BSDnews.com. Finding BSD related news isn't that hard. You can be passively involved and wait for BSD stories to show up on mailing lists that you are subscribed to and on web pages that you frequent. Or, you can go searching the Internet on sites that could possibly contain tidbits that are BSD related. An easy way to do this is to search for BSD and see what you come up with. We are also interested in things happening in supporting systems, such as XFree86, Wine, KDE, etc... These things effect BSD and we should pay more attention to them.

Reporters should make a goal of posting at least one story a week.

Please join the dn-contrib list. The dn-news list receives a lot of BSD related email and would be a good place to start.

Write a single feature Article

We are always looking for articles on BSD. We try to print 2-5 Feature articles each month. There is no committment to write another. We encourage anyone who has or is working on a BSD project to write up an article and submit it to us.

Articles should be between 1000 and 2500 words and be about or pertain to BSD somehow. Currently we accept articles in plain text or in HTML format. Our favorite format is plaintext with special HTML tags already formatted, such as links and references.

Graphics should be in .gif, .jpeg, or .png format and should be no wider than 580 pixels. Include as many as you need to get your point across.

This is a very easy way to contribute. We prefer that you write about your own special interest in BSD, so your article will be unique. However, we have a couple of regular columns that anyone can write for.

If you are announcing a new product or are with a BSD company, please try to give us the scoop. We will do our best to promote your product in the BSD arena. However, we do need some lead time to do a good job. Please send articles to article@daemonnews.org. It will be assigned to an Editor and proofreader, who will contact you with any suggested changes.

Please join the dn-contrib mailing list. If you have questions about your article, send e-mail to editors@daemonnews.org

Write a Series of articles

When an article gets too lengthy or a topic is so large that it can't be explained easily in one article, a series of articles is recommended. A series can be any amount of articles from 2 to 12. More than that and you should seriously consider writing a regular column on the subject.

We prefer to get as many of a series up front as possible. It makes things easier if we know what you are trying to accomplish with the series before we start publishing it. Submitting a schedule of articles with a brief outline of each is appreciated prior to actually sending the articles.

Each article should be along the same guidelines as outlined for a single article and sent to the same place. Please join the dn-contrib mailing list.

Write a regular column

A regular colunmn requires a bit of committment. Although, its not as hard as you might expect. Articles are due on the 11th of each month for publication in the following month. Columns can be monthly or bimonthly; a particularly productive arrangement for us has been to have two authors sharing a column, each writing every other month.

We have several columns that we are seeking people to write for:

Feel free to come up with your own column and submit your idea to the editors. Please join dn-core mailing list.

Proofread for DN

A proofreader is an assistant to a Copy Editor. They receive an article after all content changes have been made. Proofreaders make only minor grammar and spelling changes. Proofreaders will also help out by reading the preview copy of the issue and catching any errors. Basically you give the thing a good once-over.

The work load is light and a good working knowledge of English is required. Technical skills are helpful, but not required. Please subscribe to dn-contrib list.

DN Copy Editor

Copy editors are assigned articles by a managing editor or the Editor in Chief. They work with the proofreaders and the author directly to edit the article. The copy editor is authorized to make content changes that are subject to the authors approval.

This position requires the approval of the Editor in Chief or the managing Editor. Prior experience is required and a resume may be helpful in convincing us you are right for the position. The job is volunteer, but we take our work seriously.

People with technical expertise are also encouraged to apply for this position and help out as a Technical Editor.

Please join the dn-contrib mailing list. Send your inquiry about the position to editor@daemonnews.org.

HTML Formatter

After an article has been proofread, it must be formatted for the web. Right now we do basic HTML formatting and then run it through a series of scripts that finish the job.

We need people skilled in HTML and style sheets to help with this process. The responsibility load is light. You would probably format one article per month. Please join dn-contrib list.

Design graphics for DN

We are always looking for artistic talent. There always seem to be four or five art projects going on at any given time.

Join the dn-contrib list.

Web page design

We are always trying to improve our web sites and add more. There are numerous opportunities for people with web skills. Experienced web layout skills are especially needed.

Please join dn-contrib.

PHP / PERL coder

We are always trying to improve DN and make the BSD community better. This often means that we need to create web sites and services that don't exist. We have a couple web sites already in mind. We also need extra developers on some of the sites that we already have in place.

please join dn-contrib.

Search site maintainer

The search site we have just added will soon need maintainers to help keep the content current and correct. This would be a low stress job.

please join the dn-contrib.

Advocate Daemon News

Daemon News advocacy is the same as BSD advocacy. The best way to advocate DN is to advocate BSD and include DN as a reference.

There are several graphics you can include on your personal sites. DN is trying to bring BSD together, and to do that we need to Link BSD sites together.
